KW Automotive enjoyed a very successful weekend of racing last weekend, with the German suspension icon having claimed an outright win and 16 class victories in the ADAC Zurich 24h-Race Nürburgring, easily one of the toughest long-distance races in the world.
It’s a result which confirms KW as among the most successful suspension suppliers to have ever graced ‘the Green Hell.’ As if that wasn’t enough, a full 75 of the 150 registered vehicles sported KW hardware for the race, including those teams competing in the Porsche 911 GT3 R, Porsche Cayman GT4 Clubsport MR, Mercedes-AMG GT4, BMW M235i Racing, and many others.
The toughest long-distance race in the world delivered an especially entertaining showing this year, with plenty of drama and excitement, not to mention challenging weather conditions throughout. It proved a real feast for the 200,000 motorsport fans who made the pilgrimage to the Eifel region to watch it live, not forgetting the millions that tuned in via TV and online livestream.
KW-shod vehicles lined up for the race in pole, second, third and sixth, with the early running made by the Manthey-Racing Porsche 911 GT3 R (#911), twice beating the circuit’s lap record set back in 2015.
It wasn’t to last, sadly, the lead 911 crashing out of the race in the middle of the night, a result of an oil spill left by another competitor’s car.
Luckily no one was hurt in the incident, and the second Manthey-Racing Porsche was able to step into the breach almost immediately.
An entertaining, long-term squabble for the lead then unfolded, the Manthey 911 battling hard with the lead Mercedes AMG for an extended period of time, until, just over an hour from the end, the Porsche made the decisive move. The overtake was carried out in the Mercedes Arena and gifted Manthey Racing its sixth victory in the ADAC Zurich 24h-Race.
A successful debut of the new KW 4-way Competition damping technology
After extensive development work, the 24h-Race was also a final confirmation that the team’s new 4-way adjustable dampers have the ability to increase performance, while at the same time building upon the well-known reliability of KW products. KW would therefore like to take the opportunity to thank both its development and test teams, with KW Managing Director Jürgen Wohlfarth going on to say:
“The fact that 75 of our customers representing 24 different classes started the race is impressive, that they were able to take 16 class victories even more so, a real masterpiece. But even more important to us as a suspension manufacturer is the fact that with our wide-ranging racing program continues to succeed at all levels, from GT3 outfits to the countless dedicated private teams with their series-close production cars, all can benefit from the decisive edge offered by KW hardware.”
KW can offer an impressively diverse line-up of Competition suspension, including 4-way, 3-way and 2-way performance adjustable dampers, not forgetting those with fixed pre-configured damper setup. It means that racing customers are well covered no matter which level they compete at.
“In November 2017 we presented our new 4-way adjustable racing suspension at the Professional MotorSport World Expo”, says KW Development Engineer Tim Schröder. “And after the numerous tests and first successful use in the long-distance race, we decided to give our new technology a baptism of fire at the Nürburgring 24h-Race. We are very pleased that Manthey rewarded us for the extensive work already at the premiere, with the Porsche victory at the 24h races.”
Excellent record of success at the Nürburgring Nordschleife
Manthey’s success is the latest in a string of Nürburgring Nordschleife victories for KW-shod cars, with Zakspeed claiming overall honours in 2002 and Manthey Porsches crossing the line first in 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2018 – KW’s seventh overall victory as suspension supplier at the Nürburgring Nordschleife.
The successful KW Competition racing suspension technology is used by numerous car manufacturers and private teams in motorsport worldwide.
In addition to the overall victory, the KW Competition customer teams also celebrate 16 class victories, allowing the suspension manufacturer to demonstrate the performance and reliability of its offerings on the world´s toughest racetrack.
The wide-ranging KW Competition racing program offers the right suspension technology for every kind of motor sport and every regulation. KW produces the vehicle-specific racing suspension either as a homologated series development for numerous GT3, GT4, TCR and Cup vehicles, or as an individual application.
KW Competition suspension has played a role in countless victories and class successes over the years, including touring car championships, endurance classics like ADAC Zurich 24-hours Nürburgring, 24-hours of Spa-Francorchamps, 24-hours of Dubai, 24-hours of Daytona, ADAC GT Masters and VLN, not forgetting the Formula Drift series and dozens of hill-climb championships.
Many motor sport customers appreciate KW’s commitment to its racing program, not forgetting the myriad benefits offered by its advanced test facility, including its 7-post rig.
