How the BBS Unlimited wheel system elevates the Maserati MC20 individually – technical background and practical tips

Anyone looking for alloy wheels for a rather exclusive car can tell a story or two. Often, wheels are only available for the usual suspects and mainstream vehicles, if you are looking for road legal rims.

One of our customers drives his dream car, a Maserati MC20 – one of the last pure supercars. Maserati built the chassis with a carbon monocoque and mounted a 3.0‑liter V6 twin‑turbo with 630 hp behind the rear axle. Finding an affordable set of alloy wheels with proper legal certification for a car that accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.9 seconds used to be a real challenge.

The Maserati has a bolt pattern of 5×110 mm, which severely limits wheel options. But at BBS, we have the Unlimited wheel program. You don’t know BBS Unlimited? Let us explain it for you real quick.

The BBS Unlimited system allows almost any vehicle with a five‑bolt pattern to be fitted with BBS Unlimited wheels. Learn more at www.bbs.com and in our online shop.

The standout feature of BBS Unlimited is that we manufacture wheels for the 5×117.5 mm bolt pattern.

Using vehicle‑specific BBS Unlimited adapters, these alloy wheels can then be mounted on nearly any car with a five‑bolt pattern – including the Maserati MC20.

The adapters cover the following bolt patterns: 5×100, 5×108, 5×110, 5×112, 5×114.3, 5×115, 5×120, 5×120.65, 5×127, 5×128, 5×130, and 5×132 mm. Centering rings ensure precise mounting for perfectly balanced wheels. Adapter thicknesses range from 14 to 50 mm, giving full control over the offset.

For dealers, BBS Unlimited adds significant value. Once the wheels are mounted and the owner wants a tighter fit under the fenders, wider adapters can be quickly installed via the Unlimited system, instantly adjusting the wheel’s appearance. Dealers also need less inventory and can reach more potential customers.

Depending on the BBS Unlimited design, wheels are available in diameters of 19, 20, 21, and 22 inches, with widths from 8 to 12 inches. The program also includes accessories: impact protection rings, hub caps, wheel bolts, and valve covers in various colors, plus optional titanium wheel bolts.

In order to mount the BBS CI-R Unlimited wheels in 9 x 20 inch ET28 with Bridgestone tires in 245/35ZR20 on the front axle, Thomas S. modified the inner wheel arch liner

Thomas S. mounted the BBS CI‑R Unlimited wheels in Racing Gold satin with gold impact protection. The front wheels measure 9×20 inches ET28 with Bridgestone 245/35ZR20 tires; the rear wheels measure 11×20 inches ET47.5 with Bridgestone 305/30ZR20 tires.

As a small tip for Maserati MC20 drivers: with this wheel size, the inner wheel arch liner on the front axle must be pulled by about 8 millimeters using sturdy cable ties so that the tires don’t rub at full steering lock.

On the rear axle, with the 11 x 20 inch ET47.5 BBS CI-R Unlimited wheels with Bridgestone tires in 305/30ZR20, the wheel arches did not need to be modified

Basically, only one thing is missing from Thomas S.’s Maserati MC20: a set of height-adjustable springs so that the BBS CI-R Unlimited wheels look even better with a subtle lowering.

If you can’t find coilover suspensions or coilover springs from KW suspensions or ST suspensions for your car at all, then get in touch with us.

Either we’ll manufacture a custom suspension for individual certification through our custom build program, or you can submit a development request directly on our KW suspensions homepage (www.kwsuspensions.com/en). Depending on demand, such input from the market can lead to entirely new developments, such as the KW V5 coilover suspension for the Porsche Carrera GT.
